Legal Aid Agency speeds up billing process

Defence solicitors will no longer have to wait until their client is charged or released without bail to get paid for police station work, under changes announced by the Legal Aid Agency. Solicitors will be able to bill for pre-charge bail matters within a month of attending the police station instead of having to wait until the case ends. The changes to the current crime contract will come into force on 1 July.

Mutual recognition of qualifications in UK-Swiss deal

Mutual recognition of professional qualifications - including legal ones - between Switzerland and the UK will continue indefinitely beyond 2024 under an agreement to be signed by the two governments. The Law Society strongly welcomed the deal with the UK’s third largest legal services export market in Europe.

Ban on providing legal advisory services to Russians comes into force

A ban on UK lawyers providing ‘legal advisory services’ to Russians comes into force as the government ratchets up sanctions following the Ukraine invasion yet further.

UK Bill to Help Seize Crypto in Criminal Cases Gets Lords’ Approval

A new bill that seeks to empower agencies in the United Kingdom to seize and freeze cryptocurrency in money laundering cases has received the approval of the Parliament’s upper chamber. The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Bill, which was first introduced in September last year, entered one of the final stages towards becoming law after it was passed by the House of Lords.
